Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every stump is a little different, so pricing depends on the size, type, accessibility and how many stumps you need removed. Most homeowners in Southeast Michigan pay between $150-250 per stump. We offer free estimates so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins — no surprises.

  • These are two different approaches, and the right choice depends on what you're planning to do with the space. Stump grinding is the most popular option — we use a machine to grind the stump down below ground level, leaving the root system in place to naturally decompose over time. It's faster, more affordable, and causes much less disruption to your yard.

Stump removal, on the other hand, involves extracting the entire stump along with the root ball. This is a much more intensive process that requires heavy equipment, leaves a large hole in your yard, and typically costs significantly more. It's really only necessary if you're planning major excavation or construction in that exact spot.

For the vast majority of homeowners in Southeast Michigan who simply want a clean yard, fresh grass, or new landscaping, stump grinding is the smarter and more cost-effective solution. Not sure which is right for your project? Give us a call and we'll help you decide.

  • We grind stumps 6–12 inches below ground level, which is more than enough to replant grass, lay sod, or install new landscaping over the area. If you're planning to pour concrete or build a structure, just let us know and we'll grind deeper to accommodate your project.

  • In most cases, no. Grinding removes enough of the root system to prevent regrowth. Certain tree species common to Michigan — like cottonwood or black locust — can occasionally send up new sprouts, but these are easy to treat. We're happy to walk you through your options if you're concerned about a specific tree type.

  • Grinding produces a pile of wood chips that fill back into the hole. We leave these on-site for you to use as mulch, or we can coordinate them to be hauled away. Keep in mind the area may settle slightly as the chips break down, so adding a bit of topsoil before reseeding is a good idea.

  • Full root removal is rarely necessary for most homeowners. Grinding the stump below the surface is sufficient for lawn restoration or replanting. The remaining roots will naturally decompose over several years without causing any issues. If you have specific concerns about your property, we're glad to discuss what makes sense for your situation.

  • Most stumps are taken care of in 30-45 minutes. Larger stumps or those with extensive above-ground roots may take a bit longer. Either way, our equipment is efficient and we work quickly to minimize disruption to your yard and your day.

  • Michigan state law requires a MISS DIG (811) call at least 3 business days before any grinding takes place. We'll remind you when scheduling and can walk you through the process if you've never done it before. It's a quick call and an important step to protect everyone on the job.

  • We work through most of the year — spring through late fall is ideal here in Michigan. Many customers schedule in the spring before planting season or in the fall after the leaves drop. If you're not sure when to book, just give us a call and we'll help you figure out the best timing for your yard.

  • Absolutely. Once the stump is ground down, you can rake out the chips, add fresh topsoil, and overseed with grass in just a few weeks. If you'd like to plant a new tree in the same spot, we recommend waiting a year or two for the old root system to fully break down first.

  • It depends on the situation. Routine stump removal is generally considered a landscaping expense and isn't covered. However, if the stump is part of storm damage or a fallen tree, your policy may cover it. We recommend checking with your insurer — and if needed, we can provide documentation to support your claim.
